Webster describes culture as the totality of socially transmitted behavior patterns, arts, beliefs, institutions, and all other products of human work and thought typical of a population or community at a given time
A free society offers everyone the opportunity to become and practice what they believe. In America and throughout history families and schools has been the source of teaching about culture. America has been unique in that people from all over the world has gathered in this place. Though many have their own individual cultures they bring from their native land they somehow have embraced America while allowing their culture to enrich us and not burden our society. Currently, it seems with some coming from other countries there is an unwillingness to assimilate or to share an American national culture. America, as a result, is changing to accommodate this new trend. This, at least in my personal experience, has left me to feel lost, void or invalid as an American.
Aside from American culture being diluted due to the refusal of many to assimilate also lays the burden on the very public school system, amongst others, that once provided America with a patriotic and productive citizenry.
I believe the public school system is being used to dissolve traditional American culture. It used to be that everyone in public schools was taught in English at least the immediate goal was English. However, now ESL (English as a second language) classes are extended to everyone but Spanish speakers. Spanish speaker receive the only bilingual education from pre-k through 8th grade in some states. This greatly affects the culture of the United States of America as demographic changes occur.
There is no doubt that our forefathers intended for their Christian faith to be taught in schools. They certainly intended for America to pass on the national culture through teaching history, the pledge of allegiance and also the arts. Public schools and public institutions are leaning away from the traditions and even national culture of America. It is common to think of America as not having a culture or religion at all. Instead, it seems the goal is to have America to become of country of naturalized or 1st generation Americans who will make America into the very countries that they abandoned. Each culture will fight to become dominant and each religion doing the same. In the end someone will win. Then they will wish the God of America and the Christian people who loved them and shared our home with them will again return to our rightful place. I pray as I know we all will someday acknowledge the one true God in whom America trusts.
